hi all,
Haven't posted for a little while.... ds is still suffering mainly at night and has been through every medication available, because of his hiatus hernia he is going in overnight for the endoscopy and ph study.. was wondering if anyone has experience of these tests at a similar age, i would rather of him had all this when he was younger and less aware but as you all know its a big old wait for everything all the time...
i know exactly what happens but am really worried firstly about starving him before the op as he wakes up for the day round 5/6 am zzzzz ;) and we dont have to be at the hospital untill 11am (am going to see if they will change it but not holding out much hope) obviously i cant explain to him why he cant eat or drink any milk so he is going to be rather upset, And secondly the PH study am worrying how he will find this, its probably not very comforable he might get really distressed with it up his nose etc and of course he is expected to eat and drink normally which we really want him to be able to do so we can get the proper results from the study as he seems to be alot worse after eating well.

i think he still has the reflux because of his symptoms, extremley unsettled most nights when all he wants to do is sleep with general refluxy symptoms
he doesnt have any proven allergies but was dairy free untill 15 months just incase, didnt seem to make a difference either way.
the hiatus hernia was diagnosed through a barium swallow at 8 months which showed this and also exstensive refluxing.
he has been under st richards in chichester with proff candy but has now under the childrens hospital in brighton

Hi Kate, just out of interest, when you say your son is unsettled at night, how do you mean? Can you explain what he does? Also, is he on any meds still?
Harry is on 10mg omep still at 22mths, he doesnt seem to have any symptoms but wakes most nights. He is happy when you go in and doesnt do anything 'refluxy' but Im not sure if its reflux thats waking him up. He can sleep through for 6 or 10 nights for 11 hours then we could have a month of waking, its all so frustrating!
on a bad night he will wake every half hour or so crying, he thrashes around trying to sleep and will make gurgly gulping noises we have rarely had a night where he sleeps for more than 3 hours straight, but i have noticed he most definitley sleeps better if he as less food to eat ie basically nothing except milk
Oliver has 15mg of lansoprazole, i sometimes wonder if it is the medication disturbing the sleep? i am pretty sure it is a side effect... oliver tried nexium for a while and it made him hyperactive he was literally sleeping for 5 hours total a night

Yes we are under Dr Butt, oh really what do you both do?

Thanks Kate. Harry doesn't sound quite as bad as Oliver, I feel for you!
I have also often wondered if the omeprazole disturbs his sleep, the paed says not - but insomnia is listed as a side effect on the leaflet...Who knows, maybe its just behavourial and I need to get strict!
Thanks for the info.

Funny cause our paed said it can disturb sleep and even cause personality changes!
i hate having to give him these meds when he cant tell me any possible side effects he may be feeling :(
well you know they do seem to go through stages and just when you think you have cracked it they throw a spanner in the works and you wonder whats gone wrong! lol

Hi Kate
My son Ben is 22 months and had one done in Nov, so was about 20 months ish? It was ok...not as bad as I thought. We had to be in at 7.30am though which was prob a bit easier - def see if they will get you in earlier, thats ridiculous expecting him to go so long without food or drink when you can't explain that to him!!! And you won't get him into theatre straight away either...When he came round, he was quite distressed - that was the worst bit (would rather prepare you) and he did try to pull the tube out at that point. They are quite disorientated. Once he'd calmed down he was ok, they had to stick more tape all over his face and nose to keep it in but we then put socks over his hands and taped them on with micropore tape and it was much easier! He quickly found he could play with the trains on the ward with his 'sock hands' and we were allowed to stay if we wanted but decided we were happy enough to take him home overnight. we even took him and his big sister to Pizza Hut that night and he ate food with his hands - the socks went in the bin after though!
He had forgotten about it by then and slept ok with it in. when he woke in the morning though he had had a nosebleed but seemed fine, so we didn't wory too much. we went in that morning and had it taken out which he didn't like much but it was over quickly.
One thing I would do is see if you can get a little backpack (for him to wear) maybe, to put the machine in as its on a short wire and we ended up trying to keep it tucked in the waistband of Bens jeans so we weren't scurrying behind him constantly!
Thats what I'm going to do when Ben has a similar test in a few months.
I'm sure your little man will be ok - its not as bad as you think, promise

#oh thank you Emily that makes me feel a little better, they have said we can go home or stay but as we live about an hour away it a lot of coming and going so will probably just stay.... i think?? lol
just rang to confirm we want the app and i asked about times she said she couldnt change it but to speak to the nurse when he has the pre op which is about 10 days before as to when he can eat untill etc.. im still not happy that he will be going so long without anything as like you say they wont get him in to theatre straight away
he has got a little backpack i best get him to practise wearing it as he pulls it off at the moment, hes a fussy little monkey..(cant think where he gets it from?)
