Drugs Dont Work - Silent Reflux.....Are you sure???

It was interesting receiving a reply to my post from January, as it made me remember that I promised myself I would come back to the site and give an update. If you read my post ‘Too much crying’ you will see that a couple of months ago I was having a hellish time. In fact, my daughter did not stop crying really for 13 weeks. We were told she had serious silent reflux and were given gaviscon, ranitidine, omeprazole and neocate milk. I was more than happy to give her any/every medication to stop the crying. However, I felt that the situation got worse and worse with each increase in dose or change of meds. I was at my wits end. When we took her back to the paed he saw the extent of the crying/behaviour and was indeed shocked. He suggested that we take her off everything and then re-introduce each med one by one as necessary. The moment that we stopped the drugs she calmed down and stopped crying. It was like a miracle. We never re-introduced the drugs. It may be that this was chance and she would have stopped anyway and im not suggesting any of you go against your doctors advice. BUT if your treating silent reflux (not clinical reflux as im sure the drugs are 100% necessary for this) just bare in mind, there is no proof that your baby really does have this and perhaps your chasing symptoms caused by the drugs?? We most certainly were in my opinion. Also you don’t know if drugs that worked at week 6 are still effective at week 16 for example. We keep Bella on the Neocate milk as this does make a difference but for the last 6 weeks she has changed drastically, she eats well and even sleeps through the night (for now.) Im not anti drugs in any way – but as all of this baby lark is trial and error, so it may be worth thinking about this if your situation sounds similar…. I also got Bella into a very rigid routine that seemed to help her mood too – not everyone’s cup of tea, but it worked a miracle for us.

Hi Lauren
I'm so glad that you're having an easier time of it now. My 19 week old has been diagnosed from 8 weeks as silent reflux although she has started vomiting more over the last few weeks. We have just seen the paed this week and got ranitadine but we've also to go for a Barium swallow which I'm a bit nervous about but I suppose at least we'll know how bad it is I'm just worried as I've read that she'll need to be actually refluxing for it to show up on the xray and I'm thinking well what if she's having a good day. Well I suppose we'll just need to wait and see how it goes but it's really good to hear your story and how far you and Bella have came. I couldn't agree more about the routine by the way. Karen x

My baby had the Barium Swallow and it was fine. She drunk some of the solution and hey presto it showed up straight away. The liquid is thicker so we didn't have any of the usual crying so I couldn't believe it worked. Good luck and hope you get a solution.
