Hi I'm about to go out of my mind, My 7 months old has always puked his entire feed last thing at night, but since last week, he has it an all time record, and now it’s every feed, the GP’s don’t seem to be that interested and they have now prescribed him domperidone which I’m waiting to see if it works, 24hrs in no difference yet, they all just keep saying he’ll grow out of it, and we need to get him on solids, of which he doesn’t want to know,
Yesterday I hit an all time low and spent half the day in tears, I have 3 other children who are all suffering as all our energy and time goes on this little one, can anyone out there give me any help or support

Hi Nicola. sorry you are having these problems, the Domperidone can help a lot with the vomiting. I think you need to give it some time. Are you giving it 20mins before a feed where you can as that is what you need to do to be most effective? If you still have the sames problems then see a paed. with gastro expertise as there are stronger drugs they can prescribe to deal with the acid.

Hi

I cam totally understand how you feel. My son used to puke up every milk feed from the age of about 2 weeks. How he ever put on any weight I don't know. The solids did help and luckily for us he liked them. He was put on Domperidone and Ranitidine from quite early on and once the dosage was right we found the domperidone did help. He is also now on omeprazole which has also helped. You need to give the drugs some time to kick in. Our HV and GP were of the same opinion that he would grow out of it. Luckily we have private health care and we saw a gastro paed who has been very helpful. He out him on neocate milk as he thinks he may have a dairy intolerance and this helped loads and we also use a feed thickener called Carobel which I buy from the pharmacy but you can get it on prescription. It is £3.40 something a box. He is nearly a year and is still on all his meds. He still refluxes and is sick occasionally. We have found that teething seems to trigger a flare up of sickness. He is also not eating as well as he used to but not sure if this is just him being fussy or linked to his reflux. I spent so many days stressed and in tears, luckily my Husband and family supported me and did not have me down as a neurotic first time Mum.

My advice would be to try and get a referral or go private if you can to see a gastro paed. Also poss change your formual unless you are breast feeding. Neocate is £35 for a small tin so you would definitley want this on prescription. SMA Staydown is a thickened formula that is the same price as other formulas and does work for some.

Sorry if this is all a bit garbled, trying to type fast as little man is just waking up. If you have any further questions don't hesitate to ask.
Thanks everyone for all your help, I felt so helpless earlier in the week, things have taken a turn for the worse and better. We ended up in Hospital on Tuesday I just presented myself and Ollie at A&E as his nappies were dry and he was constantly puking, more than reflux, unfortunately I think all the GP’s I’d seen before Tuesday (one on Sunday and one on Monday) weren’t looking past reflux. A&E sent us onto the pead ward and he was diagnosed with gastroenteritis! On top of the reflux, he was then prescribed omeprazole on top of the domperidone, additionally they checked his dosage of domperidone and he was 10times UNDER dosed!!! So now he’s got some major meds going in, we have to wait till tomorrow to start them, as on Wednesday morning I had to wake him up, as I was worried about him after his condition on Tuesday, on trying to wake him, he was floppy and unresponsive, with dehydration, we rushed him back to hospital as we had direct access to the pead ward, because we’d been there the night before,
I’m very grateful to my good friend who pushed me to go to A&E with him, as now we are in the system for his reflux as well as having him watched over the last 2 days,
He’s now on the mend and will be starting his meds tomorrow; also they suggested we try soya milk in a couple of weeks after the meds have had a time to work as I think he’s intolerant to the milk.
Thanks for all your help as there are some useful tips and info I will keep you all posted as to him condition, as today so far he’s kept everything down
oh and also is there any good time to give omeprazole,
Hi Nicola

Looking at your blogs is like reading about me and my 5 month old Grace! I keep asking myself over and over again, what am I doing wrong, and somedays feel like i'm going insane. In the past week i've cried at least once a day! How are you doing now and more importantly how is Ollie? We have recently been prescribed Omeprazole too, it's only the 2nd day of medication, not sure if it's making such a difference but I guess we have to wait a while to see the full effect. Did you get any feedback on any good time to give it?
Hi Ruth, and everyone that’s replied tome,
I’m happy to report that Ollie is much better, 1 week into the medication and he’s only been sick majorly once, it took 2/3 days for the medication to kick in, I’m giving the dompeidone 4 times a day before feeds, and the omeprazole in the morning, it seems to be working, what dose of omprasole is grace on , Ollie has 6mls once a day. Plus the domperidone, plus gaviscon in every feed,
He still won’t eat any solid foods, the HV are a waste of space, they just keep saying oh I’m sure he’ll just go straight to finger foods. That’s ok, but he’s going to have to go some, to get enough nutrients and quantity with finger foods as he throws more on the floor than down his neck,
I know how frustrating it is and everyday is a battle with eating and colicy cramp, I’ve decided today to give him a total break from all food till the weekend to see if it makes any difference to his sleeping, as he sleeps well, 10/11 hrs each night, (I know I’m lucky)
Feel free to message me back if you want to chat, good luck
hello
i can really relate to your stories too. theo is 5 months and had op for pyloric stenosis at 3 weeks but since then has had reflux. he's on gaviscon, domperidone and ranitidine but i don't feel they do much. he hasn't put on any weight for a month (he was born on top centile and is now nearer the bottom one). due to see a specialist in 2 weeks but that seems so far away. he looks and feels so skinny and has crampy pains and is sick after every feed. i've started to feel quite down as just want to be able to enjoy my baby! i am exclusively breastfeeding. tried starting baby rice but just came back up.
i guess the next step might be the omeprazole? does this work?? i am just desperate to hear of a solution!off to docs again later. they are sympathetic but not all that helpful.

oh Julie I really feel for you I can understand how frustrating and demoralising it is to watch your child lose weight, I was reading your other postings and one thing came through for me, and that’s lactose free, I know you’ve been asked to do one thing at a time and I can totally understand this, Ollie was put on Domperidone, Omepazole and Gaviscon this stopped him puking, everyone kept telling me to wean him, he was having none of it, refusing the spoon near his face, and crying. he got gastroenteritis again, 3 weeks ago, 2 weeks after his first bought, he lost more weight and was constantly whingy, I’d asked the paediatrician about soya milk, they were happy for me to try, but also they said one thing at a time, or we won’t know what’s worked, after his 2nd bought of gastro bug, he was puking lots, it sets him off, he puks for about 10 days, constantly, I’d visited the GP to get him checked, and asked them about the soya again, once again they said wait till he’s better or you won’t know what’s working,
I decided not to wait, as he was so unhappy, I started soya milk. within 3 days he was eating solid food for the first time in his life, he’s a lot happier, still very whingy but about 60% improvement, the best thing is he’s put on 2lbs in 3 weeks, amazing.
I know your breast feeding therefore you need to cut out all dairy in your diet, for it to work, but I deff think it’s worth trying, and not waiting, we are now in the situation where we’re not sure what worked, the meds did have an effect the but the soya did too, so were thinking of now reducing the meds to see what happens, which is kind of the opposite of what they suggested, I think go with your instinct, I did and am pleased to say Ollie is so much happier, not 100% but a really noticeable improvement, as he’s 8 months now and was losing weight because he refused solid food, also the solid food is helping keep the milk down,
I really wish you luck
p.s the omeprazole has helped a lot, as it reduces the acid reducing the discomfort.
Thanks for your support! I am actually feeling positive again now. I think sometimes you have to hit a real low point before you can get back on the up! Theo is still being sick on the max dosages of dom peridone and ranitidine but in general he seems back to his chirpy self most of the time and it is heavy possetting rather than puking. However he hasn't done a poo for 4 days now so I'm worried what I'll find in his nappy next time I look!(It's the Gaviscon I think - this is my least favouirite of the medicines, why can't they invent a liquid version!)We'll see what the scales say on Tuesday and then I might try with the baby rice again. And then maybe the soya milk for me.
The GP suggested perhaps our babies will be really easy teenagers to make up for all this worry - that seems a long way away!
Many thanks again. Glad to hear Ollie is so improved
Julie x
Hi there
Well we are just back from a long appointment with the specialist and I have (as you suggested) been put on a dairy free diet. Theo is still gaining weight too slowly and they are keeping a careful watch on him. I've also been given Neocate formula on prescription to use for top ups. It's the milk proteins rather than the lactose apparently and I've also been told not to use soya in case he's allergic to that (how did he get these allergies - my husband and I are not affected by anything!). They said if an allergy is the problem we should see the results probably within a week. So I'm feeling optimistic (again!). Worth sacrificing cake for. I now wish I'd tried this earlier like you said but anyway we'll see how it goes. Theo is also eating veg now and loves it - even spinach. Though obviously very messy as it usually comes straight back up. Baby rice in evening seems to stay down though.
Strangely the specialist did not suggest Omeprazole she said as ranitidine not having any effect anyway.
How is Ollie??
Julie
Hi - Sounds similar to my 5 month old. My GP just told me that "that's what babies do" when I brought him to see her first! We tried the Soya formula for a week, but I took him off it myself as it had him crucified with constipation. He's now on Infant Gaviscon and I'm seeing similar affects. We are due back at the Dr's next week, so I think after reading your stories I will insist on a referral.

Good Luck!
hi hun, sorry you are having problems.
my dd Abbie pukes up most of her feeds, she is nearlly 18 months, and fed all fluids via a gastrostomy but she still brings alot back up, i have to change her cot bedding 3-4 times a night.
