Hi Sorry to hear your LO is getting worse :( so awful to see them suffering eh? We were on PPIs by a few weeks as the 18 hours a day screaming was taking it's toll on everyone.
We did go to the cranial osetopath and he successfully treated a few 'kinks' etc so Joe was as good as he could be as far as they were concerned after 3 sessions. As far as I understood it from them and the GP etc that cos the reflux is a psysiological weakness or imaturity of the gastro oesophageal junction the cranial and chiropractic work won't be able to do anything for this. Do correct me if I am wrong folks.
I'm from Yorkshire but do know a Mum who runs a website in Bristol re all baby things happy to ask her if she knows anyone if it will help?

Permalink Reply by Jenny Rawling on February 11, 2012 at 14:49 Hi - we're in Bristol too. I haven't used either chiro or craniosacral therapy but can ask friends if they have a recommendation. I don't know of anyone who has had great results with either for reflux though (several success stories for "colic"....)
If a baby of that age is getting worse then I'd have two thoughts, firstly have you been down the CMPI route and ruled that out, as that often seems to get more significant over the first few months. Second is that the ranitidine is extremely weight dependent so needs to be regularly increased as baby grows, and also becomes less effective over time even at the same dose-for-weight because of a process called tachyphylaxis where the body becomes more efficient at breaking it down or produces more of the H2 receptors it blocks. One of the reasons most people seem to end up on a PPI.
I'll ask around for a recommendation for the cranio/chiro..

I agree it makes sense to do whatever you can to rule out other causes of discomfort before increasing meds (another thought is has tongue tie been ruled out?) but if it truly is reflux I doubt the craniosacral therapy will make a lot of difference. My boss said Sheila was very open about the value of what she did and made no guarantees to help, but promised it couldn't hurt, the only thing at risk was your cash.
Let us know how you get on. Jen xx

if i were you i would be asking the docs for a PPI ...my lo was on ranitidine for a long time and with hindsight i really wish i'd got her on lansoprazole sooner, after 10days on that she was like a different child so i neednt have kept struggling on for months with the ranit which had clearly stopped working even giving max dose. x
Permalink Reply by Jenny Rawling on February 13, 2012 at 8:26 Matthew has never had blood in stools. He did have mucus in loose acidic smelling stools, poor weight gain, tummy pain and a red area around his bottom. There's a long list of symptoms of food intolerances but just apparently uncomplicated reflux can have an underlying intolerance so if it's not something you've investigated it's worth trying to rule it out.
We were on ranitidine from 1-4m old and in that time had increased from the bottom of the dose range for weight to the top and it still wasn't working. We then swapped to omeprazole - different child. However, at around the same time we went dairy/soya free so I was never sure how much to attribute to CMI and how much to the PPI. The combination worked and once you find a combination that works you are v reluctant to change it!
