LittleRefluxers

Hi, my 12 week old has had silent reflux since birth and was stabilising on ranitidine up until about two weeks ago and she is now getting worse everyday. I really don't want to move onto PPIs if I can help it and have read about success wih both chiro and craniosacral. We are in the Bristol area and wondered if anyone can recommend anyone in the area who has specific experience of working with babies with good results......always like to go on a recommendation especially when they're going to be prodding and pulling my baby! ;)

Thanks

Hi Sorry to hear your LO is getting worse :( so awful to see them suffering eh? We were on PPIs by a few weeks as the 18 hours a day screaming was taking it's toll on everyone.

We did go to the cranial osetopath and he successfully treated a few 'kinks' etc so Joe was as good as he could be as far as they were concerned after 3 sessions. As far as I understood it from them and the GP etc that cos the reflux is a psysiological weakness or imaturity of the gastro oesophageal junction the cranial and chiropractic work won't be able to do anything for this. Do correct me if I am wrong folks.

I'm from Yorkshire but do know a Mum who runs a website in Bristol re all baby things happy to ask her if she knows anyone if it will help?

Hi vicki

Thanks for the advice, yes that would be great if you could ask your friend. Could you also ask if she knows of any cranial osteopaths in the Bristol area recommended for babies? There are a few on the net but again it's always good to hear of recommended ones.

Hi - we're in Bristol too. I haven't used either chiro or craniosacral therapy but can ask friends if they have a recommendation. I don't know of anyone who has had great results with either for reflux though (several success stories for "colic"....)

If a baby of that age is getting worse then I'd have two thoughts, firstly have you been down the CMPI route and ruled that out, as that often seems to get more significant over the first few months. Second is that the ranitidine is extremely weight dependent so needs to be regularly increased as baby grows, and also becomes less effective over time even at the same dose-for-weight because of a process called tachyphylaxis where the body becomes more efficient at breaking it down or produces more of the H2 receptors it blocks. One of the reasons most people seem to end up on a PPI.

I'll ask around for a recommendation for the cranio/chiro..

My boss recommends Sheila Kean at the Natural Health Clinic in Stroud. She treated his son for "colic" with big improvements.

I agree it makes sense to do whatever you can to rule out other causes of discomfort before increasing meds (another thought is has tongue tie been ruled out?) but if it truly is reflux I doubt the craniosacral therapy will make a lot of difference. My boss said Sheila was very open about the value of what she did and made no guarantees to help, but promised it couldn't hurt, the only thing at risk was your cash.

Let us know how you get on. Jen xx

Hi jen

Thanks for the advice, I am willing to give anything a go so will give Sheila a ring.

I had kind of ruled out cmpi because I thought one of the main symptoms was blood in stools which she has never had?

Since posting this thread I have read that cranial osteopaths are well practiced in dealing with babies with digestive problems and reflux issues so would be interested to know if anyone has any recommendations in the Bristol area?

I had heard that tachyphlaxis might be a problem ....i have been getting her weighed every week and increasing the dose accordingly but our doctor didn't tell us we had to do this straight away.......she had put on 2lbs between appointments without the dose being increased so her symptoms came back worse than ever.......I hoped that she would settle again once this was corrected but that was 2 weeks ago and she is still bad. Do you think the effects of ranitidine are likely to be wearing off now or could it take this long to start working again....any advice greatly appreciated!

hi laura

if i were you i would be asking the docs for a PPI ...my lo was on ranitidine for a long time and with hindsight i really wish i'd got her on lansoprazole sooner, after 10days on that she was like a different child so i neednt have kept struggling on for months with the ranit which had clearly stopped working even giving max dose. x

Matthew has never had blood in stools. He did have mucus in loose acidic smelling stools, poor weight gain, tummy pain and a red area around his bottom. There's a long list of symptoms of food intolerances but just apparently uncomplicated reflux can have an underlying intolerance so if it's not something you've investigated it's worth trying to rule it out.

We were on ranitidine from 1-4m old and in that time had increased from the bottom of the dose range for weight to the top and it still wasn't working. We then swapped to omeprazole - different child. However, at around the same time we went dairy/soya free so I was never sure how much to attribute to CMI and how much to the PPI. The combination worked and once you find a combination that works you are v reluctant to change it!

My LO is CMPI and no blood in stools either. Same for us - different baby on PPI - now just bouts when teething or has a cold rather than constant discomfort and screaming in pain X
Hi Both my boys CMPI and no blood in stools either. Terrible diarrhoea for Joe (5-10 of these nappies daily) we quickly moved on from ranitidine as it wasn't really helping to a PPI (omeprazole syrup) and it made an amazing difference. We had to continually up the dose with weight gain until max and then they added ranitidine back in as well which has really helped. Max dose now though with that too. Sorry your LO is suffering hope you get some relief soon x
