best foods to start weaning on? He keeps gagging on everything i try!!

I didn't have any problems with ashton my first little boy who's only 2 now so thought i would have fairly new but valuable experience at this but with logan it's a whole different story. Seems to be settled now on meds of gaviscon and ranitidine but gagging on even the simplest things i try. He's now 16 weeks and i know that's not always the recommended time to wean but he's a good weighted baby but will not accept any more than 5 ounces at each feed due to fussiness previously so before bed time he's managed 5 bottles throughout the day but then waking several times in the night for more milk. HELP???! this is an absolute mindfield!I've tried plain babyrice today, very thin, still gagged on it, tried something nicer tasting but am scared of packet cereals as i understand they can upset reflux babies. Any help is very much appreciated, i've decided i haven't a clue what's best and HV doesn't really know what to recommend for baby with this condition! thanks xx

I've just joined today and I'm certainly no expert, but I'm going through a similar thing. My daughter's nearing 6 months and I'm no nearer to getting more than a few mouthfulls of food into her before she starts crying and looking very uncomfortable.

I am finding that the milkier cereals don't go down nearly as well with her as just a jar of carrots and potatoes. The jars are much more pureed than I seem able to make them and she seems to really enjoy them - in fact it's the only thing she actually opens wide for. Maybe anything more textured irritates her throat, I don't know... I did try pureed apples with her but I think that was just too acidic and we had lots of screaming after that.

For the moment I think I'm going to persevere with just root vegetables for now and stay clear of anything even remotely acidic - maybe I'll see if I can get my own cooked veg to the same consistency as the jars as I think she finds that quite comfortable to swallow.

I found this article quite useful as a starting point - http://www.babyreflux.co.uk/knowledge/questions/41/Weaning+&+Re...
my little girl had an early gag reflex, took her to a chiropractor who diagnosed it and she helped desensitise it. might be worth a try. also would suggest really smooth and liquidy to start and very small mouthfuls. amelia still gags if she has too much in her mouth or is getting full. oh and butternut squash was a favourite and purees really well.
Hiya, my little boy is nearly 7 months and has very severe silent reflux and is fed mostly via ng tube. but the little we do get down him is mostly very bland, basically anything that seems acidy is a no no at the moment. we were advised that pear is the least acidic and also things like sweet potato and butternut squash are good as long as you puree them smoothly. also things that are too runny will come back up easily so make it thicker using baby rice. xxx
