LittleRefluxers

Hi Ladies
Well at long last we've had our Paed appointement today and he is certain that Poppy has got reflux. It's only taken us 19 weeks to eventually get to the hospital and get some proper meds. She has been started on ranitadine and we've to keep giving her Gaviscon in her Nutrimigen milk. The consultant wants Poppy to go for a Barium swallow in the next couple of weeks to see how bad her reflux is and I was wondering if anyone out there has been in the same position? Kind of nervous about this in case it hurts feel as if she's had enough pain in her wee life. I was kind of shocked when they finally gave us meds that I forgot to ask questions on the Barium swallow so your experiences would be very much appreciated. Also I know advice seems to be conflicting on weaning but my Pead told me to hang off for as long as possible to allow her digestive system to mature. Also how long does it take for the ranitadine to get into their system amd start helping?

Thanks again Karen

Hi glad they are helping Poppy now, have no idea about the barium swallow but i'm sure it won't hurt her otherwise they wouldn't do it, they don't even like taking blood from a baby under one. Jude has finally been put onto Nutramigen milk as from Friday by dietition, need to wait and see if it helps, his reflux is worse than ever. He doesn't keep any fluid down unless he has solids after it and even then he is still sick just not as much. Have to give him solids three times a day just to make sure he is getting enough milk! Oh and doesn't that milk stink!
Thats good Jude's on the Nutramigen now I've defo noticed a difference since Poppy's been on it although she has started being sick quite a lot but it's only been in the last few weeks and she's been on the Nutramigen for a couple of months now so I don't think it's the milk. The milk is terrible smelling Elise asked me why Poppy smelled like potatoes!!
When mine was put on ranitidine they said it would take about 2 weeks for us to see any difference (it didn't make any difference to Sophia)

I'm awaiting an appointment for a Barium swallow test as well, it's harmless, they give the baby some dye in their milk, they then take a series of x-rays as the dye passes through the throat, stomach and intestines to see how it travels through, so don't worry it won't hurt. Hope you get some answers soon. x

That's not so good about the ranitadine we'll just need to wait and see if it helps Poppy!

Thanks for the info on the Barium swallow. Will you keep in touch regarding the Barium swallow and let me know when your LO goes and vice versa.

Thanks Karen
Hi all,
My daughter had a Barium Swallow a couple of weeks ago and it was fine. We had to stop feeding 4 hours before the appointment, so when we arrived she was ready for her feed. She was taken into an x-ray room and given the barium mixture which was added to sterile water. As she drunk the x-ray was taken and it was almost immediately evident that she suffered from reflux. My daughter didn't wince or complain and would have probably drunk the whole bottle of barium, in reality she probably din't even have to have 1oz. The whole procedure was really relaxed, on time and lasted perhaps 5 minutes. Compared to the screaming we've ensured it was easy.

Hope it goes well.

Hi Victoria
thanks for your reply you've put my mind at ease. I was just a bit worried in case it was uncomfortable or difficult to get her to take the liquid. I'm also a bit worried in case she's having a good day and the reflux doesn't happen. Thanks again Karen x
