LittleRefluxers

Hi Ladies, Another question!  We are almost 4 weeks on neocate. Ryan is 16 weeks almost 17. The first 8 days were difficult with poor feeding and screaming. Same as before we went onto neocate. Excema cleared up initially but is back worse than ever. The screaming stopped and he was happily taking 4oz bottles for me.  However for this past 5/6 days he has gradually went back to square one. Refusing to feed and screaming. I am in tears at every attempted feed. He has had a cold and is now chesty. Does this make reflux worse regardless of neocate working or not?

He is still only on ranitidine and i think he is actually worse after i have given it to him. We see the consultant on Wedensday. I'm worried he will say the neocate is not working and stop it. I'm hoping we can stay on it and get something else for the reflux.

Am sure you answer questions like this a million ties but I'm just looking for some answers. My daddy is ill and I'm just not coping at the minute.

    Thanks Edel

Hi Edel,

Firstly, lots of hugs to you. Coping with a crying baby and a poorly father is so hard. My mum had cancer when Douglas was born and we thought she might not survive so I can really relate. I don't want to sound like my annoying health visitor who kept saying "have you been the doctor about how you're feeling" (I could have strangled her) but it might be an idea. It's a lot to cope with and lots of people have found they needed anti-depressants or St John's Wort to cope. And some time out if you can get it.

On the Neocate, it's a tough one. A lot of us were already on a whacking dose of omeperazole by the time we went on Neocate so it's hard to know how much the omeperazole helps. When the allergy was still there, for us, omeperazole did nothing but once on Neocate my LO settled completely so maybe the combination of the two was the answer. If I were you I would want to try omeperazole.

I don't know what is in ranitidine or how allergic your child might turn out to be but it might be possible that the ranitidine doesn't agree with Ryan. It may have ingredients in it that irritate his gut so again a switch to omeperazole might help.

As for the excema, I have no real knowledge of that area but I don't think it's always connected with food. Maybe it just needs treating with something else?

Not sure what else to suggest. It's do horrible and confusing.

The other thing is that yes a cold might make things worse regardless of the milk do maybe just try to hang on until the cold's gone and see how things settle. Even a non-refluxer might sometimes go off food when teething or poorly.

Hope that helps a bit.
