LittleRefluxers

Hi Ladies. Firstly can I say this forum is a lifesaver for those like myself starting out on a reflux/intolerance journey so thanks for that.

We have been on neocate 3 weeks now. The screaming at the bottle has stopped and the excema did settle initially. He only takes 4 oz max of neocate but is getting over 20oz most days so I am not too concerned about that. The screaming at the bottle has stopped but he still fusses alot and feeding is still hard work taking an hour for 4 oz .  He has in this last week become very unsettled day and night between feeds and I can hear the milk refluxing back up. He is on ranitidine but I dont think it helps at all.

He keeps getting a really allergic reaction on his face. I initially thought it was a reaction to E45 but he has had it a few more times. his face goes bright red and actually oozes a bit whilst the top of his head is pale white in contrast. It looks like angry excema. Also his excema has flared up on legs and arms worse than ever. Can babies still get excema when on neocate. We all have a nasty cold at the minute as well.

I see the consultant again next week. So am I best to ask for omezaparole as the next step. I definatley think the neoate has helped to ease the pain during feeds.

Thanks Edel

Hi edel,
With the reflux - yes, it sounds like your son is ready for either an increase in the ranitidine or a move towards a PPI. You could also try thickening the milk with carobel or gaviscon to help reduce the regurgitation.
Regarding the eczema... Yes, you can definitely still get it on neocate. Not all eczema is food related and in many cases it is related to environmental allergies. These could be contact ones such as the type of fabric he wears, or the washing powder you use, or soaps. I struggle myself when the water is "hard" - and no amount of dietary change will affect the fact that eczema flakes in cold weather, times of central heating and so forth.
Eczema can also relate to airborne allergens such as dust, dust mites, pet dander, and so on...
You might find that your son benefits from the addition of an antihistamine such as cetirizine, ketotifen, or even piriton
Hope that helps
S xx
