LittleRefluxers

Hallo, thank goodness I found this site. I have a 5 week old boy, who since he was a week old has been crying all the time. It was only through the internet that I discovered that his symptoms matched up to silent reflux (crying, arch back, cough etc). After trying gaviscon and zantac (which didn't work) we are now on losec and domperidone. Can anyone tell me how on earth I am supposed to give Losec (5 mg)?. I have to cut a 10 mg tablet in half and then have tried dissolving it and using a syringe but all the granules got stuck in the syringe!! arg!! Also how long does it take to work,it breaks my heart that he is in pain!!!

Any advice gladly received!!

I had the same issues giving my 12 week old boy Losec. He has 10mg tablets but in the morning dose he only has 5mg of it - I was told by the pharmacist and the gastro guy to put the 10mg tablet in cooled boiled water and leave for 10 minutes but not to crush it in anyway. Then I syringe up 5mg of it making sure I have granules too and give it to Jack. its hard getting the granules down him and yes they do clog the syringe but I try to keep the syringe as horizontal as possible and keep shaking it. I find that if I squirt them on his tongue then shove the dummy in his mouth, he sucks the dummy and swallows down the granules!!! He has been on Losec for 4 weeks now, it was working really well to start with but as he is growing fast I am noticing that it doesn't seem to be as effective so will find out if we have to up our dose on our next docs visit. I agree with you its really upsetting to see your baby in pain and not knowing how long he is going to have this makes it doubly difficult. good luck.
Hi Ladies,
Thank you so much fo ryou advice. I tried to give it with syringe and like you noticed that it clogged. So I went to the chemist and asked if they could make an oral suspension, which they did (altho needed a special prescription from doc), we will see if that helps. The chemist said the oral suspension would be as effective as the tablets. How long does it take to work, Nick has been on it for a week now and he is perhaps a little bit more settled during the day but the nights are still bad bad bad......

Hi, sorry to hear you have had a rough time, I remeber them early days with my daughter, shes 7 months old now, still having a few problems but you adapt. My daughter is on omperazole which is the same thing, it comes in a liquad form, it costs the NHS a fortune, so they tend to give you the pills insead. I would ask for the liqud form, the company who make it for us is called Martindale, and Emma has 4ml ever day in a syringe, and she takes it very well, shes been on it since she was 16 weeks old.
It has to be kept in the fridge. But do ask the doctor, as they wont tell you if you dont know. It took about two weeks for Emma to settle down on it, but its been the best we have tryed, as shes also on gaverscon and domperidone.
Hope this helps all the best steph :)
Hi thanks steph, we are going back to the paediatrician next week so will defo ask. Did your doc/pharmacist send away for the liquid form of omeprazole? Our local pharmacist made it up for us, I guess he just crushed the tabs and reconstituted in some liquid, probably the Martindale version is best,as it is probably produced in a controlled environment. Nicholas probably needs a bigger dose, he is only on 5 mg and his weight is 11.7 lbs.
Why are the nights worse?????!

Hi Ya, yes it has to be sent way to be made, and takes about a week, and I have yet to come accross a pharmacy who can do the job, we always seem to have problems picking it up, but dont let that put you off, its a real good thing to have, its made the world of difference with Emma. Emmas on 4ml now per day and weighs 20 pounds, shes been putting on the weight great since shes been on the medication. She is a very happy girl ( at the moment) had a bad day sunday. I remeber the nights with Emma, hours and hours of crying. It will pass I promise.
love steph
