LittleRefluxers

I went to a baby group today and there was a HV there (not my usual one) who was talking about weaning and saying that purees should be skipped and just offer mashed food and finger food as babies can eat food in this way from 6 months & by 12 months they should be eating the same food as adults! I explained about Fraya not being able to have lumps and cannot tolerate any finger foods and she just said "aah poor you" to Fraya - very helpful!

Those of you who know, Fraya is nearly 10 months old - are your babies of this age/when they were this age able to tolerate lumps/any finger foods? Fraya will eat slightly thick purees but not with lumps in & not mashed food either. I gave her a rice cake the other day after her puree and she gagged on a piece and vomited all of her lunch plus milk from an hour before.

I look forward to receiving your comments.

Max now gags and vomits on lumps. back to pureeing. no idea why he's not tolerating lumps anymore
I can't remember when my 1st started eating lumpy food but I do remember that he couldn't eat things like raisins or oranges until AGES after his mates as he would get them stuck in his throat and vomit everything back. One thing we definitely know about HV's is that they don't know everything. It's great that Fraya is eating again - she will progress eventually but sounds like she wants to be in control of the timing!
Hi Emma

Alex has never tolerated lumpy food, it always made her gag and put her off purees and baby rice completely.
As you know, she's nearly 14 months now and it wasn't until a few weeks ago that she started being interested in finger food(until this happened she was only on Neocate). She's happy to eat very small amounts- unfortunately not enough for her to gain weight adequately- of pasta, ham, scrambled egg and toast with dairy free spread on it. Interestingly enough, the minute I add some lumpy sauce to her pasta she refuses to eat it. So I use very smooth blitzed tomato with veggies sauce.
My eldest never tolerated lumps either, interesting now that we know she suffered from silent reflux too.
HVs? I would love to get paid every month for just saying "Oh poor you" Sounds like she really tried hard!!!!!! Grrrrrr!!!!!

I forgot to mention that the psycologist, the Hv and the OT from the Feeding to Thrive Team advised not to mix different textures i.e. puree with lumps, as they get confused and apparently it's a usual problem for babies with feeding difficulties for whatever reason.
They suggested messy play with, for example jelly with bits of uncooked pasta in it, to help her get used to different textures mixed altogether. Must confess I haven't done that yet.
Hello again Emma, Helena has explained better than me but that what I was told too - avoiding the mixed textured food (eg. spag bol.) as this is tricky to eat.

Hiya Emily
When you say Cassie eats what she wants - what does she eat other than organix things or purees? Fraya can eat organix things but I don't dare try other finger foods from not knowing what to give and also from bad experiences in everything ending in gagging and vomiting food that I have taken ages to give to her. Also, what age did she start eating the other foods that you give to her?
Thanks
Hiya Helena
With regard to your first daughter - how did she get to eat lumpy food and finger food? Was it a matter of slow perseverance or did she just get to a certain age and suddenly she could manage it?
Hi Emma
sorry not been in touch been busy Emma seems to have gone down hill a little, but had a good day 2day. Hope you had a great holiday. As regards to the food, really dont worry about it Molly was not on lumps well untill she was over 12 months old, babies need time to get used to these things, as far as the HV said its rubbish thats how I started weaning with molly, and now my two year old will only eat fish cheese and cookies, and nothing else. As Emma I started the same way you did and she eats all sorts.
Annabel Karmel does these real tiny pasta star shapes from boots, these are great for adding to purees, Iv just started with Emma and shes loves them. Hope this helps
love steph
