Hi Fiona.

I'm not surprised you feel so angry. What a stupid thing to say. Fraser is being sick a lot more now (whole feeds) which he never used to do, and his paed says not to worry!!!!!!!!! It's all very well for them to say these things, but they are not having to live with reflux day in and day out!!! As if Harrison would make himself sick 22 times a day because he has his fingers in his mouth!!!!!! What baby doesn't put their fingers in their mouth or bounce a bit??????? How ridiculous. ALL babies do those things, but they aren't getting sick all day, every day!!

Hope the meds help, and if things don't improve, demand an earlier appointment!!

Hi Fiona,
I know how you feel. I was so frustrated after seeing our paed the last time. I just cried for ages afterwards. My paed said that he could not understand why I bounce Emily gently all the time and said that he thought i should stop it. If Emily's reflux is bad we always have to hold her upwards and outwards and bob her up and down a bit. If we stop or try to sit down she screams. He did not understand. I understood his point but the reality is different. He then told me that he was not questioning my parenting skills and I told him that I should hope not too. My words to desribe my feeling s for this man cannot go on this site!
I guess you need to keep on doing a fab job.
Miranda
PS Emily puts her hands in her mouth and vomits. Not loads though but I have seen other babies do it. I guess that if Harrison already has a weak sphincter he is bound to be sick more.
yeah, what is it with these so called doctors, they really have no idea what babies do at all, i have decided to go back to my GP and get another appointment at a different hospital, but he is on holiday so i have to wait until next week, but i need to speak to someone who can explain why my child gets sick 20-30 times a day, fair enoiugh he isnt bothered by it but that doesnt mean its not a problem and something needs to be done...its getting to much for me now and even my partner has had enough of constantly being covered in orange sick, we have to buy a new sofa because in sure this one has a whole new life form growing on it, im scared to let people hold him because he will vomit on them or take him to people houses because he will just cover everything in sick...i think now his more active and moving around his like a snail and leave a trail....grri just want it to stop..how many times a day does emily get sick? x
Hi Fiona,
Emily has only ever had silent reflux so she is as sick as normal babies unless she chokes on her food. She is only sick about 3 times a day and that would be a small amount so I can only imagine how annoying it is for you. If she puts her fist in her mouth then she can bring up a bit of food but I think this is normal.
I hope that you have a decent day.

Hi i know exactly how you feel not about the sickness but about a waste of time appt. But if i were you ring the secretary and ask who it was last time you saw and say you weren't happy and if it wasn't the consultant which i very much doubt it ask to see him you probably saw one of the donkeys, i saw an SHO which stands for senior house officer basically a gp who is learning to specialize in peadiatrics i went to be seen as she was let out of hospital in the april and saw this cow in june. I explained that she had some more seizures and the patronizing cow said that is normal for a reflux baby to fine shake, i said i know what a seizure is and it is not fine shaking, i explained with fine shaking do you get no response for a minuite and floppy, so when i recieved the letter she said that Zoe was more floppy than normal (bitch)!!!! But the tables were turned when i went to see dietician who went and got blood test results that they said were normal and she isn't allergic to milk apparantly but then she said i would like to point out this and it was her total ige it was sky high so she as other allergies, but that is normal (not bloody likely) so i phoned the secretary and asked to speak to consultant she asked why and i told her, within the hour the consultant rang me back, yes because they have made a mistake nothing was said at all about it, they had overlooked it, he said he will see Zoe and ask for more allergy tests, prick tests and food challenges, i am still going to have a go at them the way she spoke to me like i was thick. Basically you will see normal gp's half the time that are learning and you need to ask to speak to someone who cares and knows what they are on about. The only other way is take him to a&e when he is major vomiting, sometimes they put their hands in their mouth for teething it shouldn't make them sick, slack get, Also if they have reflux they can also do this if their throat is hurting, Zoe used to do it all the time before she was put on meds and i am talking not in her mouth but right down her throat and make herself gag and it didn't make her sick and she has reflux tell them they haven't a clue. But definately speak to the secretary and tell them that you weren't happy with who you saw and you want to see the consultant, who knows what they are talking about. I really feel for you i ended up finding more info on here than off them as they are useless. I am taking it all with me and telling them about it. Gits, you have touched a raw nerve, good luck. Hope you get your boy sorted out, did they give him the meds? Sharon x
Just wanted to say poor you, I have cried buckets after my appointments as it is all so exhaustoing explaining over and over again, and then been sent away with yet another combination to try and battle on.

However, wanted to say that Stella went through a really annoying stage of making herself gag all the time with her fingers. It drove me mad - but we ended up letting her suck a dummy a lot and that really worked. She is now 9 months and puts lots of things in her mouth, less her fingers and she rarely gags now. So, I would say it is a stage and resort to the dummy for short term help with the problem until that stage passes.

Hope that tip helps!
I know just how you are feeling! With my first little girl I had never even heard of reflux and was told by my HV and GP that "all babies cry - its normal" and "all babies are sick" Also, when her weight dropped off the graph they just said are you producing enough milk?? (I was breast feeding). I said that I was definitely producing enough but most of it was ending up on the carpet!! I eventually got referred to a very good paed (a woman - not being sexist but they tend to be more sympathetic than men doctors) who was furious at my HV and fired off a strong worded email to my surgery! With my second daughter I was a bit more forceful and got her referred to a paed as soon as I noticed her symptoms - but the appointment still took ages to come through. When I finally saw the paed ( a man) he said that her weight wasn't too bad (ie not off the charts) so she didn't need any meds. Luckily my husband was there and backed me up about how much pain she was in and how difficult she was to feed. ( She was all smiles at the appointment as they often are!) The paed turned round and said "if you want we could experiment and put her on meds. I was absolutely fuming - and it made me feel like I was a neurotic mother who wanted her baby to be on medicines! Anyway I gritted my teeth and said I would try the meds so I didn't have to watch my daughter in pain. They have helped with the feeding and the pain and at the follow up appointment I did feel a little smug when the same paed looked at the graph and saw she had gone up 2 percentiles in 8 weeks!
If we ever have a third baby we are going to save up to go private as its highly likely that it will also suffer from reflux.
Good luck with your little one - if I were you I'd ask to see a different paed. Its such a shame we have to be so forceful with these doctors as we already have so little energy left from looking after our poorly LO's that there isnt much left to be arguing with doctors!
hi,
first of all, i am sending you huge hugs - it makes me so angry that they can get away with saying things like that. do they really think we want to be taking our babies to hospital and filling them full of meds?? initially, i was really lucky with the docs. after a couple of consultations my gp took me seriously and has been behind me 100%. at my first appointment at the hospital, ella had a complete meltdown so the consultant knew what she was capable of. unfortunately, at the last appointment it was a different consultant. ella was obviously all smiles. i said that things were up down and that ella could still be really bad, screaming and arching, burping, choking on her own vomit (i dont need to tell you what reflux is!!) and he said that she is pretty much on max doses of all the meds so it couldnt possibly be that she was in pain - it must be learned behaviour!!! oh my god, i was incandescent, but managed to keep my cool. yes, when i am holding her while she has a nap during the day and she wakes up screaming and arching and generally inconsolable, that must be learned behaviour??? idiots.
hope you are having a good day - you sound like you are doing a fab job.
