advice on silent reflux - please really worried and need peace of mind

Hi

After lots of reading about reflux this evening, I am begining to think that my 11 week year old boy has reflux or even silent reflux as he never vomits. I have had 11 weeks of stress trying to work out what is wrong as nearly every time i breastfeed him, he makes such a fuss crying, pulling his legs up etc and also does not sleep during the day and most of the evenings are spent trying to get him down to sleep with him waking up 10 mins later crying . I believe that most of the crying could be because he is overtired but could this also be reflux ???? Any advice would be great and also is it serious as really worried now

thanks

Hi Katie it could be reflux or allergy/intolerance to something you are eating which is why he may be in pain, saying that a lot of the allergy/intolerances cause reflux, have you been to a gp or seen hv? if you have what have they said? It is hard as a lot of them may try and fob you off with colic remedies like they did with zoe but these made zoe worse as they relax the muscle to let wind out that already isn't working properly so makes the sickness worse. Let me know how he gets on if you see a gp. Good luck. Sharon x
Hi Katie, It does sound like it could be silent reflux. Your boys experience sounds very similar to my son's, who is now 22 weeks but was diagnosed at 11. He would sleep so little day and night and we could never put him down, he spent most of the day crying and would only ever sleep on our chests or in his baby carrier(after a battle). When he was first born he would breastfeed continually and yet his weight was not going up, we ending up topping him up on formula. He then started to pull off the breast in the middle of feeds, screaming. He had chronic wind and seemed to gulp air when he was distressed(we later realised this was his reflux) we were at our wits end especially as I have a 2 year old(nearly 3!) . Eventually after lots of tooing and froing between HVs and docs he was finally diagnosed. Things have improved greatly since being put on ranitidine. We found that never laying him flat helped especailly after a feed also try feeding him at a slight angle(you may need to experiment!) We eventually got him sleeping in his bouncy chair so he was upright, until we recently bought him an amby hammock which is fantastic, I highly recommend them. The paeditrician we saw said that he would have had ulcers all up his gullet due to the acid, this would explain why he was struggling to sleep, you can just imagine the discomfort. The only good thing about reflux is that babies do grow out of it, but it is so hard when you are in the middle of it. I would really push your gp if you think it might be reflux. I hope you get to the bottom of it soon, as having an unhappy baby is both physically and emotionally exhausting. x
