Daniel saw Dr Thomson at The Thornbury Hospital in Sheffield on 27th June 2008 to review the current dosages of his meds, he had been taking 5mg/5ml Omeprazole Suspension (5ml once a day) and 5mg/5ml Domperidone (2.5ml three times a day). Dr Thomson asked us what Daniel’s symptoms were and his feeding history. He also asked if there was a history of asthma, hay fever, eczema and hiatus hernias in our families to which I replied that there was. Hayfever and eczema run in my family and hiatus hernias in Michael’s family. He examined Daniel and weighed and measured him and has subsequently increased his Omeprazole to 20mg per day split into two daily doses which I believe is the maximum dosage allowed. He said he wouldn’t bother increasing the Domperidone as it isn’t that effective. He said that he was very confident that Daniel will outgrow his reflux by about 14 months of age but until this time he will need it to be kept under control and he has recommended that he be weaned from the drugs at around this time, when we will have to drop the dosage to 10mg per day for a week then stop them. He has written to the GP and our paediatrician at Royal Bolton Hospital advising them of his recommendations. I just wished that we had gone to see him sooner when Daniel was at his worse. Things are still not brilliant, his sleep is very poor but he has started teething about 3 weeks ago and he has had 3 teeth coming through all at the same time which hasn’t helped matters at all. He’s even started to vomit again although not as much as in the early days which is no doubt down to him teething. I went to GP last Monday and got her to change Daniel’s prescription from Omeprazole Suspension to Losec MUPS as at the revised dosage he would be needing a bottle of the suspension every week which isn’t practical as it takes the GP 48 hours to prepare the prescription and the pharmacy 48 hours to order it in and I would be ordering prescriptions every few days. Plus the MUPS are supposed to be more effective as well.

Hi Lisa,

We too went to see Dr Thomson at Thornbury on 10th July. I think Dr Thomson is a fan of splitting the Omeprazole into 2 doses, he did this for us too. 12mg in the morning and 12mg at night. Have you spoken to your regular paed since the appt. with Dr Thomson? If so was there any awkwardness? I am expecting this when my regular paed finds out! Good job I've transferred fully to Dr Thomson so she will be out of the picture! I'm glad Callum hasn't yet started teething, I don't think we would manage! How old is Daniel? Callum is 6 1/2 months.

One more thing, we get Omeprazole suspension in 300 ml bottles and I think it is twice the concentration of yours. Ours lasts 1 month so I only have to get the presciption once per month. You can specify the size bottle you want and the strength. Ours is 2mg/1ml. I found the mups terrible. Callum used to bring up the little purple balls HOURS after having them.

Hi Jen

Daniel hasn't seen the paediatrician at RBH since seeing Dr Thomson, we have a follow up appointment on 12th August. I am expecting it to be a bit awkward but I'll just have to see how he is, the main thing is that Daniel's on the right dosage of meds which is why we went to see him in the first place because I was frustrated with the NHS, only having an appointment every 3 months when I know that the meds need to be reviewed if your baby is gaining weight. I didn't know that you could get the suspension in 300ml bottles, the ones Daniel has been getting are 140ml bottles, they don't tell you this (let's face it they don't tell you anything, everything I've found out about reflux and treatments I have found out off the internet). The MUPS are a bit awkward trying to make sure that there's no residue left in the syringe or medicine cap whatever you are mixing them up in, I just didn't want to be ordering prescriptions constantly. Daniel has been dreadful since he started teething, coughing and choking and the vomiting has started to reoccur the last few days. I suppose I'm lucky he doesn't have a feeding aversion as I don't think I could cope with that on top of the irritability and sleeplessness.

Love the picture by the way.

Thanks, that was Callum at 10 days old, still in SCBU. I had a terrible womb infection at that time and was in absolute agony!

I know what you mean about them not telling you anything, it's been like that since day 1. One thing I found when we were on MUPS was that if you put the tablet in a neurofen syringe then suck up some water, the lumps come out properly and dont't get stuck, you also don't have any go to waste.

Hi Jen

I forgot to say Daniel is 11 months old I'm just hoping he's coming to the end of the reflux rollercoaster (you can only hope). Callum looks gorgeous on pic, you'll have to put some more photos up of him (time permitting obviously). I keep trying different methods of dissolving the MUPS I've tried Nurofen syringe, medicine cap, spoon etc. I'll just keep trying, eventually I'll find a method that works best, the little balls just stick to everything. I'll probably try the syringe method again, I've only tried it once so far.

we just dissolve the tablet and put it in some puree or yoghurt. Sure you have tried this, but with my son who is now nearly 3 i always syringed the losec into him until he came off the meds at 13 months. I look back now and wonder why an earth didn't i put it in his food like i have been doing with my daughter since 6 months.

Hope you are nearly there. I have just started this week weaning off the losec to see if it works so we are doing 5mg am and 5mg pm. Fingers crossed! She is 10 months.

Hi no hope of Zoe growing out of it at 14mths as she is 16mths now and still on 20mg at 15mths they tried taking her off her 15mg of omeprazole and after 36hrs was barely conscious due to throwing up and dehydration so they upped it to 20mg she was only diagnosed at 11mths so may take a little longer. I hope your babies do grow out of it at 14mths heres crossing fingers tightly for you. And Lisa i am glad your appt went well and you got better meds for Daniel and i am with Jen on the Omeprazole Zoe can't tolerate the mups at all she gags on them and doesn't seem to get the full dose in the syringe food or however i give it because she is older and quite forward she knows when it is there and spits it out, so she might as well not be on it. Zoe is also on the suspension and it works well for her. Sharon x
