LittleRefluxers

Hi Everyone

My daughter has reflux. She was on Omeprazole to control the pain which was working but then when we had to increase the dosage due to her weight it started getting difficult to give as Grace would gag on it and then vomit everywhere. They have therefore put her on Ranitidine since Saturday and so far we have not had any bouts of pain.

However, since the beginning she has been on Domperidone and this seemed to have made the vomiting worse but we kept on it following the advice of some girls on this web page. The vomiting has improved but we tend to have instances where Grace cannot settle asleep because she is getting a lot of regurgitation. She then wakes herself up and either is sick or swallows it back down. We do have her moses basket on an incline but it does not seem to be working. We have been told to increase her Domperidone to 1.7ml four times a day.

I am not sure what to do as it seems to be since we started Ranitidine that the regurgitation has got worse although that could be a coincidence. If we come off the Domperidone, im just wondering how soon we should see any results if it improves it and then if it makes it worse, how quickly it will start to work again!!

Any advice would be welcome
Thanks
Jacqui

Hi Jacqui,
My baby, Aidan was prescribed omeprazole and domperidone and he was much worse on these meds. I tried them for 2 1/2 weeks and by then, I was so exhausted that I just stopped them and within about 24 hours Aidan was back to normal (pukey and stroppy, but still a huge improvement).

Hiya

I am going to take Grace off domperidone and see how that goes. Thank you

Jacqui
Hi
My son was on domperidone and ranitidine. The paed has taken him off domperidone as he said it didn't have that much benefit so it was pointless neing on it. The ranitidine has stopped the pain and he is ok now - stopping the domperidone made no difference really. He still gets sick, but we thicken his milk. Have you tried this? We use 'Thick and easy' which makes the milk into a creamy consistancy. It may be worth a try??

Hiya

I am breastfeeding and so not able to make it any thicker. I am going to take Grace off the Domperidone and see how that goes

Thanks
Jacqui
Yes, it may be worth a try. Keep us posted.

Hiya

Just to let everyone know that we took Grace off her Domperidone and she did get worse and so we have put her straight back on it. It was worth a try (with a couple of sleepless nights) but at least we know. We have our appointment at GOSH on Wednesday for her Floppy Larynx and so they may be able to give us some answers and advice as this is related to the whole Reflux.

Can I ask one thing, although Grace is sick from time to time, her main problem is the regurgitation during the night. The minute we put her down in her moses basket we can hear the milk coming back up into her mouth and she either swallows it or chokes on it and wakes herself up. This can continue all night.... Is this normal and part of reflux?

Hope everyone else is ok and well

What was Fraser like when he was on domperidone? Was his eating worse than now or the same?
Hi Jacqui, Emma is on domperidone, and ranitidine and gaviscon. Im not sure if things are getting better, I did see an improvment for a week but shes now back to wiggerling around and crying when I feed her, I can only get one bottle into her at the moment thats first thing in the morning, and then its a struggle for the rest of the day, she wants it but I can only dream feed her. She was so sick yesterday the worst by far it was every where. Guess where im gong back again next week, to see the doc. Hope she gets better very soon.

Hiya
So sorry to hear you have had a bad week. I have come to realise that every day and night is so different. You get your hopes up when you have a couple of good days and then when a bad day comes along, you are totally devastated. Hope things start to improve for you.
Take Care

Hi Jacqui

Grace's night regurgitation problem does sound like due to her reflux.
Do you use a wedge or something similar to raise her head in the moses basket. We used to have the same problem with Alex, but since we started to use a cot wedge and bed blocks, she sleeps much better.

Hiya

Grace is still in her moses basket which we have on an incline but does not seem to make any difference. We may transfer her to her cot soon and so hopefully that will help. The problem with the incline (and I suppose the wedge) is that she ends up wriggling down so much and when she is at the end where there is nowhere to go, she ends up bending around and so she is in a heap!! Does that happen with Alex?
Hi

HJust read this quickly and have to go to bed, but please see my recent post to Emma re stopping medication. I have stopped domperidone for four weeks and STella is a lot better without it (on it for four months). She is on the highest dose of omeprazole (20mg). She is definitely thirstier without domperidone. I spoke to a top gastro paed in London (Dr Thomson at the Portland) who said domperidone and gaviscon are pointless medications, but the acid suppressors do work.
