LittleRefluxers

Hi,
My son Luke has been screaming with pain and sick since he was a week old! They tell us breast is best and yet he did not thrive whilst being breast fed. I topped him up with aptamil and have now gone to 'easy digest' I have almost stopped breast feeding as he is at least now putting on weight. Unfortunately his pain is no better, it is heart breaking to see and hear him. He constantly has wind, is sick and gulps almost all the time. He gets little rest from it some days and he is sometimes to exhausted to feed. I have been looking at the 'reflux aids' there is a large cushion thing that looks quite good but is £70 which I will pay if it works?? Also a wedge for the cot and a small one for the changing mat!! I wondered if anyone has actually bought any of these products? It would be nice to hear of the success/failure rate before we spend anymore money!!! Luke has the breastflow bottles which have an inner teat so should be good for stopping air! I'm getting a little at the end of my tether as I don't know what else to do to help him. He is on gaviscon now so I am hoping!!!!!!!!!!!!! Any tips would be great too!!!
Many thanks
Julie and Luke!!!! (Oh and my mum who suffers along with us!)

Hi Julie,
I have not used any of the aids. However, I prop her matress up by putting a pillow under it (she has a small cot so it fits under the matress perfectly. I also have reusable nappy booster pads at the top of the changing mat to raise it slightly. When she was in the cary cot I would raise the pram base by putting the yellow pages under the back wheels. These things all work for us as she does not sleep well at all when she is on a flat surface.
I hope that this helps you.
Let us know if you buy any aids which work.
The only thing that i have bought for her reflux is a different bouncer - it is a fisher price one. we had a more upright one and she screamed the house down when she was in it.

Hi there,

We have't bought anything expensive - just used books/blanket to prop up crib at an incline and towels under one end of the change mat and pram matress to make a slope.

Now Liam is going to move into his big cot I've bought some cot blocks to prop it up - they are only about £13 - so it's more stable. Liam is a good sleeper though so haven't tried any of the other sleep aids. A friend has tried some kind of hammock she said was very good (but expensive!)

I've also bought a chair with an adjustable back - see other discussion thread - hope this helps.

Hi Julie, We bought the Tucker sling from Tuckersling.com it's fantastic. It cost around £80 including special shipping from America. You have to email the guy to get a price as it's not available to buy online. It's a 30 degree angle and a really snug fit. We take it with us when sleeping over at parents etc. instead of a carry cot. They go up until the child is about 18 months I think. You can buy the wedge and sling separate or together. I would definitely recommend!

The first night we put him in it, he slept 8 hours. Over the course of about 3-4 days, he learned to sleep through on his own and still does 3 months later! He's only 5 months.

Hi Julie,

my little boy Ethan only got formally diagnosed at 11mths after he'd had a nighttime cough (the cough was caused by the acid burning his throat) for 3 mths, although he was put onto omeprazole & ventolin & Piriton, it hasn't completely got rid of his cough and his sleep was still extremely unsettled. So as I was back at work fulltime and not doing very well with unbroken sleep every night and had tried shoving pillows under his mattress which seem to help a bit, but not very good for the mattress, I "googled" and discovered the baby reflux site and bought some blocks, which I have found to be really good as they work on his travel cot too and I also bought a wedge and he is sleeping through the night again. The problem with the wedge is he does slide off it during the night, but as he's now 13 mths it only really raises his shoulders & head and he's way too big for any of the wedges with position maintainers. But he's sleeping better so that's all that matters!!

When he was little he used to really like his swing (indoor motorised one) when he was really distressed it always put him to sleep.

Hiope this helps

Hi

Save yourself some money if you can! Babies are expensive enough without all the extra "reflux aids" - we have put wooden blocks under one end of Fraya's cot and on the changing mat I put her head on a pillow when I change her - easier than propping up the changing mat as she can't slip with the pillow.
Hi Julie i also don't have any expensive gadgets i use rolled up old blankets and pillows to prop the mattress and a good couple of thick books to prop under the feet of the cot and it does the trick. And like Karen Zoe was also diagnosed at 11mths old she is now 15mths old. Its up to you but i know they can work out expensive some of the items. It is up to you but why pay out when you can find things in the home to use. Sharon x
