I wondered if anyone who has gone private could give me some information about prescriptions. If your child is prescribed medication or the dosage of existing medications is changed at a private consultation do you have to pay for the cost of the medication or amended prescription or is it still prescribed under the NHS as a free prescription. It is my understanding that any prescriptions would still be free because they are for a child and children don't pay for prescriptions under the NHS anyway (but I may be wrong about this) you would just have to pay for the consultation and any tests or examinations that were carried out, is this correct? If anyone could give me some more information on this I would be grateful.

Hi There,

When we went private with Rory we have to pay for the meds prescribed there, but then when you need more you can take them to your gp and get them prescribed on the nhs. When going private the children nhs rule doesnt seem to apply and you do have to pay. but once you have them you can get your gp to do the repeat prescription.

Hope this helps!

Hi Lisa,
We took the script to our GP and got him to put it on prescription, also once we saw Dr shah privately and he said there was a problem, my GP asked our local consultant to write a referal to DR Shah and we are now being seen on NHS.

Hi ladies

Thanks for the info, this helps with my deliberations as to whether to seek a second opinion privately.

Thanks!
