Hi

Would be interested in finding out if anyone else has found that gaviscon has caused constipation. My son is straining so hard that he is being sick more. I have tried lots of things and am now wondering if its his medication.

Thanks

Yes, I found that gaviscon caused constipation and therefore my daughter wouldn't eat as she was too full up because she needed to empty her bowels but couldn't. Therefore, I stopped using it and am now just using SMA Gold without anything (as the GP won't prescribe anything else!) How helpful of her! She won't even take the condition seriously! Consequently my daughter is sick nearly every feed :(
Hello

I used Aptamil easy digest, gaviscon, ranitidine and domperidone
to help with the constipation I always add one extra volume of water to the measures of milk, this way James has more water and it helped.

Hi all
i didn't use Gaviscon. It was prescribed but i have an Earthy / Hippy husband ;-) who was all " we will do this naturally". so outwent the gaviscon and the ranitidien and all the other meds and in came things like fennel tea and slippery elm. BUT the pediatrician did warn me that gaviscon makes babies constipated and he said that if that did happen i was to give sugared water. I think he said a teaspoon in a bottle (200ml) of warm water (obviously boiled)
i know everyone saus NO sugar and i mentioned this to him and he went on and on about how nowadays things are taken to an extreme and we need to learn that everything in moderation is fine and that when a baby is constipated you need to sort that out beforeworrying about teeth and developing a sweet tooth,. So he basically shut me up.
anyway, hope this is of some help

Hiya
Gav really constipated my son too, he once didn't go for 2 weeks and he seemed to be in agony, it was dreadful. But others seem to be fine on it. We were given lactulose to help, but my son was later diagnosed with cow's milk intolerance so we stopped it. saying that, the best thing that worked for us was to try to get extra water into him between feeds, oh and our hypoallergenic formula has really helped (his constipation has completely gone since we've been dairy free). We're still on gav, omeprazole. Interestingly, my sons' 'reflux noise' which is similar to a grunt/goat is very similar to the noise he made when he was constipated, both things really made him strain his stomach and arch his back so the picture was sometimes very cloudy to what was going off.
sorry i dont know if this actually makes sense?! aahhh the joy of sleep deprivation.....
I hope things are better for you and your son very soon.
