Hi there everyone

I was just wondering if anybodies babies were old enough to be having lumpy food and how they are getting on with it?

Rory is nearly 1 and from all the development point of view should be having mashed up family meals now - and he's not! i cook him pureed variations of our meals but he can only seem to swallow very small soft lumps. i cant seem to give him finger food really either as he seem to choke on them (and this provokes the projectile vomiting!!)

im worrying now as babies his age should be having fingers of toast and baby crackers and stuff, rory chokes even if its a banana or one of those organix carrot puff things and they dissolve more or less! Also if i give him jars he even seems to gag on the 7month ones!

Has anyone else come across this with babies of a similar age?

BTW Rory new meds arent kicking in yet but we're still hopeful, im giving it til next week and if no improvement ill be booking him in for the ultrasound/tests. Im also still hopeful that he'll wake up a happy contented baby and we wont need to go through that!!

Hi,

i was given a lecture by the HV two weeks ago as at 7 months, i was still pureeing Max's food. So i stopped and since i have stopped he has been pulling pained faces, gagging and then projectile vomitting. he has almost choked 3 times, turning purple and then me having to hold him by his feet just to get things down and out.
I am being told to keep with it and get him used to the lumps but i am not sure it is good for him as he now hates meal times and is scared to eat.

Hi Jena

I have a seven month old girl who started off feeding on purees great and then it all started to go wrong. It took a few weeks to get her to eat lumpy food. I would puree the food a little less each time and eventually she started taking it. One thing that i found was that she eats better feeding herself and that was when she started taking lumps, I gave her a rusk to chew on and she would gag a little. But the more she got used to it the less she gaged and she now copes ok.
On saying all that my daughter does not eat very much and some days screams when i try to feed her. Also my friend has a girl with reflux who is still refusing to eat any solids at a year and another friend who's boy didn't start taking lumps until his reflux disappeared at a year.

I have stopped listening to my HV. You know what your baby can handle and reflux babies are always going to be behind other babies where feeding is concerned. Don't worry about what and how much he is taking he will not starve and in his own time he will eat more.

Take care

Hello Jena

Helen is absolutley right and you should let your little one do it in her own time.

I have a 18 month old who still hates lumps no matter how I try to introduce it. She will only eat in form of finger food herself - and she is thriving! I have noticed lately she is more interested in mum and dads dinner so I hope I will have more sucess in introducing 'proper meals' soon. What I dont wont is to make meal time a trauma - I have tried this appraoch and it didnt work resulting in my daughter refusing food for a month.

Each and everyone is different and will develop in their own unique time!
