LittleRefluxers

hey just about to go to bed (for how long is anyones guess)

we had hosp today and long story short(ish).. they have said that as far as they are concerned the next step is the PH study to test the reflux before they try any other medications. I really dont want him to have this done, i said to them that i wanted him to be tried on a different medication but this doc has point blank refused saying ranithadine is a really good medicine and that would be taking care of the acid anyways.

He's going to be at his first birthday soon and we are hardly moved on at all with his symptoms and nobody seems to care at all about him!

We tried gaviscon when he was really little, he's dairy/egg/soya free and he's been on ranithidine and IT DOESNT WORK, but they havent tried any of the others that everyone else seems to be trying..

I said i have done my research and babies with milder symptoms than rorys get prescribed these other medications to try - because everyone is different and what works well for some babies doesnt for others etc, so wouldnt it be worth trying one of these other ones before putting him through the horribleness of the PH study and the doc has just said he's not willing to prescribe it without the ph study because that is the next step to take and the other medicines im speaking of arent that different anyway and cause problems of there own.

I really dont know what to do next. i dont want to put him through the ph study i really dont but i really do think he needs stronger meds! im just so upset about it and since we've been back i just feel exhausted with it all... im just so tired and tired of struggling to try and make someone help my poor baby. Everyone around me is kinda taking the lets just get on with it until he grows out of it attitude, but i just dont feel i can do that. . my baby is screaming in pain every night and its me who is with him and reassures him everything will be ok, and i cant stand it that i cant make it ok! i feel blue.

sorry needed to write it out before attempting to sleep.

Whats next? going private? would they try different medication without the ph study? would they actually run some tests to check if theres an underlying problem? back to the gp?

sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo tired

Love to you all and hope all babies are well
xxxxxxxxxx

ps, did people meet up today in the end? how did it go?x

Hi Jena

I am so sorry that your doctor has been like this. I know only too well how this gets you down. I dont think ANYONE knows what its like seeing a baby crying with pain from reflux all the time until it happens to them. I only got taken seriously when Dominic kicked off big time whilst at my local health center for a routine checkup.

Ranitidine seems to work at first and then for some reason just stops working. Omeprazole does take a week or so to seem to work so you have to persevere but it does seem to work for most babies. I am positive this private doctor will be much more helpful and supportive.

Dominic had to have a barium swallow to rule out any other causes for the reflux, this was not too traumatic. Dominic also is on adult gaviscon liquid 1ml after every feed. Our local sick kids hospital said that they do not prescribe gaviscon infant powders as in their words "they dont work" all they do id thicken feeds slightly. Gaviscon adult again is not tested on children but it sure does seem to work better than the powders. The other drug he takes which i think has made a difference is Domperidone this apparently makes the stomach empty quicker.

Anyway good luck and let us all know how you get on. Just remember your a brill mum and you are doing the best thing for your baby and yourself. Ignore the get on with it brigade. Why should anyone be in so much pain if there are things available that help.

Good Luck

Oh yeah and i meant to say, Yes use Calpol, the doctor at the hospital and my GP both said to do this if he is really bad. I think it does help a little so its worth a go!
Hi Jena

I'm glad to hear that the appointment went well and I hope that the omeprazole does the trick for Rory and makes his symptoms a lot better. It's a pity that the NHS hospital couldn't have done this for you earlier instead of letting Rory suffer. Fingers crossed that this medication works for him and that you don't need to go down the route of investigations.

Keep us posted how you get on.

Take care.
