LittleRefluxers

My son, Oskar (4 weeks old), was diagnosed with reflux earlier this week. He has (mostly) silent reflux, that is, he does not vomit frequently, but he screams constantly and seems to be in pain. This means that he does not sleep very much and neither do I, for instance, in the last 24 hours he has only slept 5 hours solidly. I also think that he wakes up from excessive wind. I was wondering if anyone has had similar experience of reflux and wind going hand in hand. I also try to burp him for at least 30 min after every feed and am only very rarely successful. Is it not more likely that a baby with reflux burps/ vomits easily?

Any advice would be gratfully received.

Hi Amber

I was told that William had colic at first, which he probably had alongside the silent reflux. He had infacol to help bring up the wind. Is Oskar breast or bottle feed? You could try changing your bottles if he's creating too much wind. William was entirely breastfed. I also enrolled on a baby massage course which was really helpful in terms of having tummy exercises to shift excess/trapped wind. I could find myself doing massage at 4 or 5 am when William was suffering, it does work, as you hear it!!!

Bringing up wind isn't easy sometimes and I used to spend ages trying to wind William. Putting him on his tummy used to work for me as the pressure from being across my lap and being rubbed on his back was like a double yammy so to speak. But this may be too much for your little one.

My boy only started vomiting after 3 1/2 months, which became a nightmare, I was constantly changing him and cleaning up sick.

Hope that helps.
Claire
Hi Claire

Thanks for your help. I use to have him over my knee to get rid of the wind and that did help with the farts but I was told that this was not good for reflux and I should only have him over the shoulder or sitting upright on my lap. Do you still use this method?

Thanks Amber
I have to admit Amber that I don't, not since he started vomiting! I have to have William on my lap, then over my shoulder, back on my lap. I stand up, sit down again, have him on lap. Sometimes he burps really quickly, other times I have to go through the above!

Now he is on solids, the problem isn't so bad.
Hi Amber, it sounds very tough my daughter is just coming up to 5 months and has always struggled with wind and we were told that her crying was colic too as with Claire and her son. We have in the last few weeks found that it is silent reflux and wind. It was very hard especially when she was newborn to get the wind up. like you I would sit for 30mins after a feed trying to get wind up and perhaps get one burp if i was lucky then lay her back in her crib and 10 mins later she would scream, i would pick her up and out would come the biggest burp. My sister told me that it isn't necessarily the rubbing or patting of the back that helps get the wind up but trying to hold the baby as straight backed as possible. Very difficult with a newborn as they're so floppy but I found that it did really work and as Emily's head holding got stronger this got easier as she would do it more for herself. Walking up and down the stairs also seems to help bring up the wind although you have to be careful with the reflux not to bring up the food too.
We also tried infacol for the colicky symptoms which took the edge off and made her more settled although never completely settled.
Hope this helps, my daugther still really struggles with her wind and the reflux ...and hiccups which are sooooooooooo annoying. She is on gaviscon and gripe water and doesn't scream as much but is still unsettled after her feeds and when she is tired.
i hope things get better for you, I'm sure we'd all argee on this site that we've all been there with a baby that cries excessively and is unsettled most of the time and our support goes out to you. Oksar looks like an extremely cute baby, well done you.

Kind regards, Nicola
